How to Start Parallel: Free Sci-Fi TCG, Cards Optional as NFTs

Parallel is the biggest-name card game on the blockchain map — a sci-fi TCG from a studio with mainstream backers, in free open beta since February 2024 and on Steam since April 2026. The honest split: download and ladder against everyone for free with the full non-NFT card pool; the web3 layer (Echelon-owned cards, Prime token, cosmetics) lives behind an optional marketplace most players never open.

What Parallel is#

A five-faction sci-fi trading card game — pick a Paragon, build a 40-card deck, and fight with a bank-or-play energy mechanic that replaces mana — from Parallel Studios. In open beta since February 29, 2024 on Epic Games Store and Google Play, and on Steam since April 2026. The web3 half runs on the Echelon ecosystem (Base): some cards exist as NFTs traded on the Parallel Marketplace, the PRIME token powers the economy, and the studio’s own FAQ states plainly that no web3 wallet is required to play. Current status sits on the Parallel registry profile.

Requirements#

  • A PC or a phone — free on Steam, Epic Games Store and Google Play.
  • A game account — standard signup; the official FAQ is explicit that no web3 wallet is required.
  • A wallet only for owning cards — buying/selling NFT card versions on the Parallel Marketplace (Echelon, on Base) is the only place a wallet appears; playing and laddering does not need one.

The start#

  1. Install from Steam, Epic or Google Play — the same account travels.
  2. Pick a faction and learn the energy choice — banking a card vs playing it is the game’s whole skill axis; the tutorial covers it fast.
  3. Ladder with the free pool — the open-beta card set is playable without buying anything; competition happens in the same queue whether or not your cards are NFTs.
  4. Understand the two card versions — cards exist as regular in-game cards and as NFT versions on Echelon; the NFT versions are collectible/ownable, not stronger.
  5. Only look at the marketplace when you want to own — PRIME and card NFTs live on Base; the free game stays complete without them.

What the NFT layer actually adds#

  • Ownable versions of cards you already play — the same cards exist as NFTs; owning one is about collection and resale, not unlock — you can play the card without owning it as an NFT.
  • A real secondary market on Echelon — cards trade on the Parallel Marketplace on Base with actual liquidity for chase cards; prices are set by rarity and demand like physical TCGs.
  • PRIME as the economy token — the ecosystem token for the Parallel universe; a market asset, not a power item.
  • A mainstream-studio take on ownership — Parallel’s angle is “AAA card game that happens to have NFT versions,” the opposite shape from the P2E era’s NFT-first designs.

Safety notes#

Big-name TCG, big-name scams. Fake “Parallel card pack” drops, cloned marketplace sites, and Discord DMs selling rare NFT versions at “prices” are the documented patterns around popular TCGs. Only trade inside the marketplace linked from parallel.life — never a site reached via DM or a search ad; the game is free, so anything charging for “access” is fraud; and treat NFT card prices like any collectible market — they spike on meta shifts and crash on rebalances.
