How to Start Nine Chronicles: The Wallet-Free On-Chain RPG

Nine Chronicles is the most blockchain game you can play without ever seeing a wallet: a free, open-source idle RPG where every single action — every battle, craft and trade — is a transaction on its own peer-to-peer chain, and none of it asks you for crypto to start. Install, pick a name, play. The decentralization runs under the hood whether you care about it or not.

What Nine Chronicles is#

An idle RPG from Planetarium — you gear a hero, run dungeon battles on auto, craft equipment, and climb arena ladders — where the unusual part isn’t the gameplay but the infrastructure: the game has no central game server. Every action is a transaction on Libplanet, Planetarium’s own P2P blockchain, so the world state is literally distributed across players’ nodes. All in-game items are NFTs on that chain, the NCG token powers the economy, and the client is fully open-source with modding tools. Current status sits on the Nine Chronicles registry profile.

Requirements#

  • A PC or a phone — free on Steam (Windows) and as Nine Chronicles M on Android; the mobile build runs on its own Heimdall chain.
  • Nothing else — no wallet, no purchase, no crypto account. The chain account is generated for you inside the game and lives in your local keystore.
  • A backup habit — because there’s no central server, your local keystore IS your account. Save the passphrase/key file somewhere safe or your hero is unrecoverable; support cannot reset it.

The start#

  1. Install from Steam (or the Android store for Nine Chronicles M) — the same studio runs both.
  2. Create a hero — the game generates a chain account for you in the background; pick a name and you’re in.
  3. Save your keystore/passphrase before anything else — this is the only step that matters. Screenshot it, write it down, put it somewhere offline.
  4. Run the tutorial dungeon loop — battles resolve automatically; your job is loadout, crafting and arena climbing.
  5. Use the in-game market when you’re ready — buying/selling items other players crafted is normal play, not a separate “NFT thing” you opt into.
  6. Only go external if you want more: NCG can be wrapped to Ethereum or BNB networks, and the open-source client (Mimir/Chrono tools) is there if you want to mod or inspect the chain itself.

What the NFT layer actually adds#

  • Everything is an asset — not “some items”: every item in the game exists on Libplanet, so the crafting materials, gear and NCG are all on-chain by default rather than bolted on.
  • A player-run economy with no operator switch — because state lives on a P2P network, the world doesn’t go offline if the studio’s servers do. That’s a real resilience difference, and it’s the reason this record has outlasted most of its cohort.
  • Open-source tooling — the client and infrastructure are public on GitHub; modders and tool builders work on it like a platform, not just a game.
  • Token exits exist but are optional — NCG wraps to ETH/BNB if you want the outside market; playing without ever wrapping is complete, normal play.

Safety notes#

Your keystore is your account — there is no recovery desk. A decentralized game can’t reset your password for you; lose the key file and passphrase and the hero is gone. Keep the backup offline and never type it into a website or Discord DM — nobody from Planetarium will ever ask for it. Second: play only the official clients — nine-chronicles.com, Steam, or the official mobile store — because open-source games get repackaged into fake clients that harvest keys. And as always: NCG’s market price is a market price, not a yield rate.
