How to Start Playing Star Atlas
“Star Atlas” is not one game you can download — it is a product family, and the honest answer to “how do I start” depends on which part of it you mean. Right now there are three distinct experiences, each with different access requirements, and none of them currently demands crypto to try. This guide maps them, verified against official sources on 19 September 2026.
What is Star Atlas?#
Star Atlas is developer ATMTA’s space-exploration gaming ecosystem — an ambitious project that spans a browser strategy game, a simulation layer and an in-development Unreal Engine 5 MMO, connected by a shared on-chain economy. Because the pieces are at different stages of development, treating “Star Atlas” as a single game leads beginners astray; the correct first question is which Star Atlas you want to try. Our registry profile tracks the verified status of the whole ecosystem.
What can you actually play right now?#
Three things, all accessible today:
- Holosim — a free browser simulation, no wallet needed. The gentlest way in.
- SAGE C4 — the flagship strategy/economy game, currently in open beta on the public test realm (PTR), also playable without a wallet.
- The UE5 build — early builds of the eventual MMO, available but still firmly in development.
Holosim#
Holosim is Star Atlas’s free browser-based simulation — the lightweight introduction to the universe’s systems (fleets, resources, faction identity) without any on-chain requirements. It runs in the browser, needs no crypto wallet and no purchase. One caveat: the team has officially deprioritised Holosim while focus shifts to SAGE C4, so expect its development pace to stay slow — it’s a look at the setting, not the full economy.
SAGE C4#
SAGE (the Star Atlas Galactic Economy) is the real game underneath the ecosystem — and it’s mid-transition. The new version, C4 (Combat, Crafting Habs, Claim Stakes, Council Rank), turns SAGE into a full 4X experience and is currently in open beta on the public test realm at sage.staratlas.com, with all content unlocked for testing. Crucially, the PTR is playable without connecting a wallet — this is a test environment, not the live economy. The older SAGE (Starbased) is being superseded by C4 rather than maintained alongside it. When C4 eventually reaches mainnet, owning ships/crew/resources and connecting a wallet will matter — but that is a future state, not today’s requirement.
The UE5 MMO build#
The flagship vision — a full 3D space MMO built on Unreal Engine 5 — exists as playable early builds: ship combat, planets and multiplayer are functional enough for community play and tournaments. But it is not the released MMO; treat it as a development build showing where the project is heading rather than a finished game.
Do you need a crypto wallet?#
Not today. Holosim needs none, the SAGE C4 PTR needs none, and the UE5 builds need none — you can experience the entire current Star Atlas family without touching crypto. The wallet question only becomes real when you want to own assets in the live economy — ships, crew, claim stakes — which is where the future C4 mainnet comes in. That distinction between playing and owning is exactly what our wallet explainer covers.
One technical detail worth knowing without memorising: Star Atlas’s on-chain economy is migrating from Solana to the project’s own z.ink blockchain — the testnet is live and the C4 PTR already runs on it. C4’s mainnet launch is officially contingent on z.ink’s genesis event, so timing remains conditional rather than dated.
What does Star Atlas cost?#
Nothing to try — all three experiences are currently free to access. Where it gets interesting is that Star Atlas is a single franchise containing different access models: a pure free sim (Holosim), a free-to-test game that will have a real asset economy (SAGE C4), and an in-development MMO. It’s the clearest example of why “is it free-to-play?” needs unpacking — our free-vs-paid explainer uses exactly this distinction.
Which Star Atlas experience should you try?#
There is no single right starting point — it depends on what you want:
- Just curious / want a look → Holosim. Five minutes in a browser, nothing to set up.
- Want the actual strategy/economic game → SAGE C4 on the PTR. This is where the development energy is; remember it’s a test environment with resets expected.
- Want to see where the MMO is heading → the UE5 build, if you have a PC that can run it. Early and incomplete, but real.
What is still in development?#
- SAGE C4 mainnet — in open beta; launch timing depends on z.ink’s genesis and has no confirmed date.
- z.ink mainnet — testnet live; the Solana→z.ink migration is in progress.
- UE5 MMO — active development; early builds playable, full release not dated.
- Holosim — functional but deprioritised; treat it as stable-but-slow.
Staying safe#
- Access Star Atlas only through official domains: staratlas.com, sage.staratlas.com, holosim.staratlas.com.
- The current test environments need no wallet — be suspicious of any site asking you to connect one to “claim” C4 access or test rewards.
- You never need a seed phrase to try Star Atlas. If anyone asks for it, it’s a scam — see the rules in our wallet guide.
