How to Start Playing EVE Frontier

EVE Frontier is a space survival MMO from the creators of EVE Online — a persistent, player-built universe that happens to run on blockchain infrastructure rather than a conventional “NFT game.” It’s playable right now in open alpha, but access is paid. Here’s exactly how to get in and what your first hours look like.

What is EVE Frontier?#

A moddable space-survival MMO for PC and Mac, set in the wider EVE universe and built by Fenris Creations (a CCP Games studio). You wake in the Frontier — a broken, hostile corner of space orbited by three black holes — where everything runs on fuel and almost everything is player-built: mines, refineries, defenses, even programmable structures called Smart Assemblies. Survival is the baseline; building back civilization is the long game.

Its verified status in our registry is early access: a live, evolving alpha with real development still ahead. The full record — status, dates, sources — is on the EVE Frontier profile.

Is EVE Frontier free to play?#

No — not in the conventional sense. Playing today means buying Founder Access, which starts at $39.99 (CCP has run limited-time packs as low as $19.99). That buys unrestricted 24/7 access for the whole open-alpha period plus perks like name reservation and premium subscription time after launch.

There is also Remnant Access: free, trial-style playtesting slots that CCP grants periodically. It’s application-based — you register an account, apply for trial access, and get a limited playtest window that is revoked afterward. Remnants get no Founder perks. It’s a tryout, not a free tier — and availability isn’t guaranteed.

How access works#

  1. Register an account at evefrontier.com.
  2. Get access: buy a Founder pack, or apply for Remnant trial access from your account page.
  3. Download the client for Windows or Mac and log in.
  4. Play: servers run 24/7 during the open alpha for Founder Access holders.

What you need to play#

A Windows or Mac machine, an EVE Frontier account, and either Founder Access or an approved Remnant window. You do not need crypto holdings, a token balance, or a pre-existing wallet to start playing — the blockchain layer is wired in behind your game account, not in front of it.

EVE Frontier’s Sui blockchain and EVE Vault#

EVE Frontier was originally conceived in the Ethereum ecosystem, but CCP announced in October 2025 that the game is being built on Sui — a layer-1 chain designed for the game’s scale of player-built objects. This is worth stating plainly: older coverage describing an Ethereum/EVM design is now outdated.

At player level the architecture is deliberately low-friction:

  • EVE Vault is the official wallet and identity layer — a web app and Chrome extension that holds your Sui-based assets and acts as your passport into EVE Frontier dApps.
  • zkLogin creates your wallet from your existing EVE Frontier sign-in — no seed phrases to manage.
  • Sponsored transactions mean the game absorbs network fees — gas management is not a normal gameplay task.

Blockchain isn’t completely invisible: it becomes relevant the moment you own assets, use third-party dApps, or trade — EVE Frontier supports LUX (the day-to-day in-game currency) and the EVE Token (a Sui utility token for ecosystem participation and special assets). For the connect/sign/own fundamentals, see which wallet you need for blockchain games.

Your first hours#

The New Player Experience drops you alone in a quiet starter system in a basic starter ship (the Wend) and teaches four pillars — piloting, base building, industry, combat — by making you do them:

  1. Salvage wrecks near your spawn for ore and fuel (use the tactical camera to spot them).
  2. Mine asteroids and deploy a portable refinery.
  3. Learn combat basics against Feral Drones — managing fuel, capacitor and hull repair under pressure.
  4. Build your first real ship, the Reflex, from refined materials and drone drops — it’s your ticket out of the starter system and into the wider Frontier.

What do you actually own?#

It helps to separate four things: playing (access via Founder/Remnant), game items (ships, structures, fuel — the ordinary stuff of play), blockchain-backed assets (items represented on Sui, managed through EVE Vault, including Founder perks like name reservation), and player-built systems (Smart Assemblies you program — toll gates, trading posts, defenses — plus any dApps built on the public data layer). Not every gameplay item is an on-chain asset; treat the registry’s asset-type field as the precise answer rather than assuming “everything is an NFT.”

Important caveats#

  • This is an open alpha — content, balance and even infrastructure can change, and launch timing is unannounced.
  • The project is mid-migration to Sui; details of the chain layer are still being implemented.
  • Access is paid — Founder Access from $39.99; trial windows are temporary and application-based.
  • As an alpha, expect instability and potential resets; play for the experience and development access, not as a finished product.
