Dead or Just Quiet? The Games in the Middle

“Is this game dead?” usually has a wrong assumption inside it — that dead and alive are the only two states. In the NFTVideoGames registry, 49 of 165 tracked games sit in unknown: neither confirmed running nor confirmed ended. This piece explains what that status actually means, what the middle looks like in practice, and why the honest answer to “is it dead?” is sometimes “nobody can currently prove either.”

Why we don’t just call them dead#

Our lifecycle statuses are evidence-based, not vibes. shut_down requires a closing statement or verifiably dead infrastructure; sunset requires an announced end-of-service; paused requires a stated intent to return. Silence alone is not evidence of death — and this registry has collected several warnings against assuming it. Undead Blocks looked dead for a year before being acquired and relaunched on Avalanche in July 2025. Wolf Game survived its own publisher’s wind-down when a collector bought the IP outright. The games that came back are exactly why the registry has a middle state: calling a game dead that turns out to be in a quiet acquisition, rebuild, or takeover is a worse failure than admitting the evidence ran out.

The four shapes of the middle#

Looking at the 49 unknown records, “not provably either way” takes a few distinct forms:

  • Running but silent. The game still serves — sometimes thousands of players are still in it — but the developer has stopped announcing anything. Farmers World still functions as a WAX farming game years after its devs went quiet; Prospectors, one of the oldest live blockchain games, keeps running with no dated updates; Bit Heroes Arena is playable while Kongregate’s Bitverse has been silent since mid-2023; MOBOX, Blockchain Monster Hunt, Crypto Raiders, X World Games Farsite Monsta Infinite — live Monsta Chain, dark channels since July 2023 — SecondLive (AI Metaworld shipped June 2025, silent since) and Common Ground World (game page live on games.gala.com, no dated official post since December 2024) all fit the same shape: operational product, silent publisher. The September 2026 evidence sweep added eight more: The Machines Arena (open beta live, last signal June 2025), Moonray (store betas live, silent since May 2025), Acryptia (live, silent since Season 3 in 2023), Brawlers (live on Epic, silent since August 2025), Tatakai (protocol site live, silent since October 2025), Egg Drop (DappBay ‘Playable’, silent since October 2024), Spider Tanks: Cores of Chaos (launched December 2025, silent since) and Seraph (Season 5 ran December 2025, seasonal cadence broken); HIM (still downloadable across Mini App, Web and Android, last official signal the April 2026 ‘ONE’ merge teaser), Voxie Tactics (live with the VOXEL economy running, last news June 3, 2026), Zeeverse (client live on Ronin, newest release v1.7.7 January 2026), CryptoBlades (last official act the July 2025 SKALE build announcement), Plant vs Undead (farming resumed after the October 2024 ‘temporary break’, nothing dated since) and Influence (live on Starknet mainnet since June 2024, no dated feature update in 2025+).
  • Infrastructure degraded, no closure statement. Pegaxy — once among Polygon’s largest games — now serves 525 errors across its web infrastructure with no official statement of any kind. Ethermon, a December 2017 original, open-sourced itself to community grants in 2019 and its site is now unreachable. Dragonverse Neo‘s dedicated game portal is unreachable too — the last official season announcement was June–July 2025, with no closure statement of any kind. Light Nite, Walken and Zoo Crypto World — whose BNB Chain contracts went dormant in August 2022 and whose domain is now dead — show the same symptom set: degraded or dead official surfaces, nothing formally announced.
  • Quiet mid-rebuild. The project is demonstrably working but its public surface has gone dark during a transition. Apeiron is redesigning its god-game around personal AI agents; Benji Bananas went quiet after a community governance handover; MixMob shipped its mobile racer in May 2025 and hasn’t surfaced since; Castile and Wild Forest are open-beta titles in similar silences; Kuroro Wilds suspended its alpha in March 2025 to rebuild and hasn’t resurfaced; Civitas went dark mid-migration to Immutable zkEVM; Age of Rust — the solo developer’s October 2023 update described progress toward an Epic Store release and an upcoming demo, with nothing dated since.
  • The odd cases. Spells of Genesis — the first game to tokenize assets — halted development in 2019 and simply never announced an ending. Crypto Unicorns lost its Xai grant four months after migrating and went quiet rather than dead. Vexi Villages was posting build updates as late as November 2025 and has been silent since. Dragonary ran a documented D1→D2 sequel migration in January 2025 and hasn’t posted since — still playable, officially quiet. And CyBall is the acquisition-that-went-quiet: Coin98 bought it in December 2022 promising uninterrupted service, then never surfaced again. Mini Royale: Nations fits the silent-pivot shape — Faraway moved its public roadmap to other titles with no closure stated. X Empire is the tap-to-earn variant: still serving its mini-apps, down ~90% post-TGE, no official signal either way. Tiny Colony migrated Solana → Immutable X for scale in January 2023 and has posted no dated update since. DeFi Land — an OG Solana farming sim — was folded under the Kind Knight studio umbrella in December 2023 and went quiet after the reshuffle.

What usually breaks first#

Across the 45 documented endings, the death sequence is remarkably consistent: the Discord and social accounts go quiet first, then the announcement feed, then the store or mint pages stop updating, and the game client or site is the last thing to die — sometimes by months. That order is why the unknowns exist: a game can be sociologically dead while every server still serves. The converse also holds — Voxels runs on a solo developer’s cadence and its quiet months mean nothing.

The re-review rule#

Unknown is not a verdict — it’s a timer. Every unknown record carries a 30-day next_review_at, the shortest re-verification window in the registry, and the whole cohort was systematically rechecked at the September 24, 2026 review — one record resolved to paused and one to active — with the rest rolling forward to October 24. Each one will resolve to living, to one of the non-living states, or stay unknown with refreshed evidence — the discipline is described in how we verify blockchain games, and the endings those states feed into are catalogued in how blockchain games actually end.

Why the middle matters#

The unknown cohort is where endings begin. Nearly every shut_down record spent months in silence before the announcement arrived — the unknowns are the front edge of that pipeline. For a player deciding where to spend time, the honest signal isn’t dead-or-alive but “when was the last dated evidence” — which is exactly what each record’s verification fields carry. A game in the middle deserves caution, not panic; assets bought in it deserve neither.
