How to Start Exploring Decentraland: Guest Access, the Client and What Assets Cost
Decentraland is the most browser-friendly virtual world in the registry: guest login, no wallet, nothing to buy. You can be inside Genesis Plaza in about five minutes — the only real choice is whether to run the browser build or the desktop client.
What Decentraland is#
A community-built 3D world on Ethereum where players explore scenes, attend events, and trade digital assets. It is not a game with objectives — it is a social platform governed by a DAO, so the honest expectations are “walk around, meet people, see builds” rather than “progress through levels”. Its live status and ownership facts sit on the Decentraland registry profile.
Requirements#
- A device — desktop client for Windows or Mac (the recommended path; noticeably faster than the browser build), or the mobile app on Android and iOS.
- An account — social login with Google or Discord, or connect a wallet like MetaMask/Coinbase Wallet. Guest access exists for a no-commitment look around.
- A wallet — optional — you do not need crypto or a wallet to explore; one is created behind the scenes if you sign in socially. You only care about wallets when you want to own or trade assets.
- MANA — optional — the ERC-20 token used for marketplace purchases. Not needed to explore; the marketplace also accepts credit/debit cards.
The five-minute path#
- Download the Decentraland app from the official site (decentraland.org → “Jump In” / download page).
- Launch it — a browser window opens for login. Sign in socially or connect a wallet.
- Back in the app, click “Jump Into Decentraland” — you spawn at Genesis Plaza.
- Open the backpack to customize your avatar, then use the map to jump to scenes or check the events feed for whatever is live right now.
If the world loads slowly in a browser, that is expected — the desktop client renders scenes substantially faster. Decentraland is GPU-intensive for a browser tab.
What the assets do#
- Wearables and emotes — avatar cosmetics, the most common purchase; bought on the marketplace with card or crypto.
- NAMEs — unique avatar names as NFTs.
- LAND parcels — ownable map squares for building scenes and experiences; expensive and unnecessary for visitors — most players never buy LAND.
- MANA — the utility token behind marketplace trades; descriptive only — this site does not cover prices or earning claims.
For what NFT ownership actually means — custody, marketplaces, and what happens to your assets if a world winds down — see what game NFTs actually do and what happens when a blockchain game ends.
Worth knowing in 2026#
Decentraland has stayed relevant on cadence rather than hype: a steady community event schedule and the newer desktop client did most of the work. Its Ethereum anchor makes it the registry’s clearest example of a DAO-governed virtual world that is simply still running — the contrast cases are in how blockchain games actually end.
