How to Start STEPN — Sneaker NFTs, Honest Economics and the Trial Mode

STEPN is the move-to-earn game almost everyone has heard of: strap on an NFT sneaker, walk or run, earn tokens. It’s still running — Marathon events rolled into Season 3 in August 2026. The honest catch: the earning loop costs real money to enter (an NFT sneaker), and the 2022 collapse of its earn token is the best-documented lesson in the category — this is a fitness app with a token economy, not a paying job.

What STEPN is#

A “move-to-earn” lifestyle app by Find Satoshi Lab: you own an NFT sneaker on Solana, the app GPS-tracks your real-world walking, jogging or running, and it pays out in-game tokens for movement within a daily energy budget. Four sneaker archetypes (Walker, Jogger, Runner, Trainer) match different speeds; attributes tune how much you earn, how fast the sneaker wears, and what bonus drops you get. STEPN GO (2024) is the expanded sibling app — team play, sneaker renting, avatars and social challenges on the same GMT economy. Live status sits on the STEPN registry profile.

Requirements#

  • A phone — iOS or Android; there’s no browser version of the core loop.
  • An account — standard email signup plus an activation-code flow for new users.
  • A sneaker NFT — required for the main earning loop; buy one on the in-app market or rent one in STEPN GO.
  • A Solana wallet — optional at first — the app’s built-in wallet handles tokens; connecting your own only matters once you care about self-custody.

The free start#

  1. Install STEPN GO — the current, actively developed app — and use its trial/guest mode to see the interface before buying anything.
  2. Learn the unit: sneakers have attributes (Efficiency, Luck, Comfort, Resilience) and a finite HP — repairs cost tokens, which is the built-in sink that keeps the economy from being pure extraction.
  3. If you try the earning loop, start with the cheapest viable sneaker or a rental; treat the outlay as a game expense you’d accept losing, exactly like buying a game.
  4. Run or walk your daily energy, repair the sneaker, and keep a record of what a session actually pays before scaling up.

The honest economics#

This is the part the marketing won’t tell you. STEPN’s earning loop requires buying an NFT — it is not free money. The utility token (GST) is what sessions pay out; it has no floor, and in 2022 its price collapsed as the economy inflated — early “pay back your sneaker in weeks” claims evaporated. GMT (the governance token) is earned only at high levels and trades on real demand. Neither app’s token is a wage: earning depends on token price, sneaker quality and daily discipline, and the market side can be worth very little. If you’d buy a fitness app anyway, the token layer is a bonus; if you’re buying in for the earnings, run the current numbers first and assume they can go to zero.

What the assets do#

  • Sneaker NFTs — the playable asset; determine archetype, stats and earning capacity. Tradeable on the in-app market and external venues (MOOAR, Magic Eden).
  • GST — the utility/earn token: spent on repairs, minting new sneakers and upgrades; earned by moving.
  • GMT — governance token, earned at high level; also spent on premium functions like minting and leveling.
  • Gems and badges — upgrade items that slot into sneakers, also NFT-tradeable.

For what ownership means mechanically — custody, marketplaces, and what happens to assets if a game winds down — see what game NFTs actually do.

Safety notes#

Only install from the official app-store listings and stepn.com. STEPN’s popularity made it a top phishing target — fake “STEPN” APKs, counterfeit sneaker-mint pages and “activation code” sellers have been documented. There is no official browser-earn version; any site asking you to connect a wallet to “start earning” outside the official apps is not the game. Never type a seed phrase into a website.
