The 2021 BSC GameFi Cohort: The Registry’s Densest Mass Extinction, Measured

In 2021, BNB Chain — then Binance Smart Chain — was the densest GameFi habitat ever assembled: low fees, fast blocks, and a retail audience primed by play-to-earn made it the default launchpad for a generation of NFT games. The NFTVideoGames registry now tracks 24 verified BNB records, and the chain’s 2021 cohort is the most completely measured mass-extinction event in the set: of thirteen games first playable in 2021, two are confirmed alive, two are confirmed dead, one went out on record as a sunset, and eight sit in silence — neither proven running nor proven ended.

The cohort, measured#

Thirteen of the registry’s BNB records shipped their first playable builds in 2021 — the year “play-to-earn” went from a niche experiment to a retail craze. Five years on, the verified count reads like a stratigraphic layer: Thetan Arena is still running and Faraland resurfaced as active at the September 24, 2026 review; CryptoMines and Mist are documented dead, Bomb Crypto left on record as a documented sunset, and Plant vs Undead, MOBOX, Blockchain Monster Hunt, X World Games, SecondLive, Dragonary, Monsta Infinite and Zoo Crypto World are all unknown. The chain’s later records — SERAPH, Dragonverse Neo, HIM, Tatakai, Egg Drop and 2022’s CyBall — sit in the same silent bucket — the largest single-chain silent cohort in the registry. That is a statement about this curated set, not the whole market — but no other chain in the registry carries this much unverifiable silence.

The documented deaths#

  • CryptoMines — the archetypal boom-bust. At peak it was one of BSC’s biggest games; the ETERNAL token collapsed ~99% on exploits and dumps, the team discontinued Legacy on December 8, 2021 with a discount-ticket bridge into a reboot called Reborn, and Reborn itself faded after its April 2022 economy rework. The sequel that couldn’t escape the original’s gravity.
  • Mist — the game that tried to become a chain. A playable 2021 alpha pivoted to announcing its own EVM network (“Mist Chain”) in April 2023 — and the studio folded while pitching it, recorded out of business in December 2025.
  • Era7 — the migration-as-euthanasia. A Hearthstone-style TCG that ran real esports seasons, then closed its BNB version on September 30, 2023 for a zero-gas relaunch on GasZero — player data explicitly did not transfer — and the successor is now dead as well.
  • Bomb Crypto — the documentary close. The Senspark bomber ran through the crash, published a feature-complete retrospective, and wound down to a sunset with its BCOIN token delisted — an ending with actual documentation.
  • League of Ancients — lost its developer. The “world’s first free-to-play and play-to-earn MOBA” outsourced its build; the June 2023 contract termination forfeited the funds already paid, and the company is recorded out of business as of February 2025.
  • Age of Dino — the newer casualty. Not a 2021 game but the same ecosystem: a 2024 launch backed by Binance Labs that still went silent and then formally shut down — evidence the extinction wasn’t only an early-cohort event.

The silent fourteen#

The unknowns split into the shapes catalogued in dead or just quiet: MOBOX, Blockchain Monster Hunt, X World Games, Dragonary and Monsta Infinite, SecondLive, SERAPH, HIM, Tatakai and Egg Drop fit “running but silent” — the product still answers while the publisher stopped announcing; Zoo Crypto World and Dragonverse Neo fit “dead infrastructure, no statement” — Zoo’s contracts dormant since August 2022 with the domain gone, Dragonverse’s play portal unreachable since September 2026 while its parent site lives; and Plant vs Undead and CyBall are the odd cases — a pivot nobody documented and an acquisition that went quiet. None of them closed. Almost none of them can currently be proven alive. Every one carries a 30-day re-review window — the September 24, 2026 sweep already resolved one of them (Faraland → active); the rest are due October 24.

What survived — and why#

Four of the chain’s 24 records are still living, and the pattern matches the play-to-earn postmortem: the survivors decoupled from the earn promise. Thetan Arena kept being a free, polished mobile MOBA long after the earn layer stopped mattering. Audiera rides the AI-agent roadmap it shipped in 2025-26, and World of Dypians sits in early access, and Faraland resurfaced with dated official blog activity through July 2026 — four survivors in a 24-record set. SERAPH, Dragonverse Neo, HIM, Tatakai and Egg Drop all launched into the same post-P2E design space — and all five are now silent records the October sweep will retry. The BNB chain explainer calls it the quiet survivor chain; this is what the survival actually cost.

What the layer says#

BSC’s 2021 boom produced the registry’s single richest fossil bed: thirteen games, of which two-thirds now sit in unverifiable silence. The deaths weren’t one mechanism — token collapse, platform overreach, fatal migration, lost developers, and plain exhaustion each took a share — and the silence that followed is its own category of evidence. For a player in 2026, the honest summary is narrower than the headlines: the chain didn’t die, but the cohort that made it famous mostly did, and the survivors are the ones who stopped selling the earning.
