Which Chain Kept Its NFT Games Alive? Survival by Chain
Did the chain decide whether an NFT game lived? Across the registry’s 165 records, the honest answer is: the chain didn’t kill them, but it didn’t save them either — survival tracks who a chain hosted, not the chain itself. Measured by verified status, the spread is real: Polygon carries the deadliest cohort (7 of 11 records ended), Immutable has a clean sheet (11 records, zero endings), and BNB is the silent chain — 14 of 24 records can’t be called at all.
The survival table (chains with 3+ records)#
“Ended” means paused, sunset, shut down or pivoted away from games; “silent” is the registry’s honest unknown bucket — no closure announced, no reliable live evidence either.
- Polygon — 11 records, 7 ended, 4 silent. The graveyard: it hosted the 2021-era “scale Ethereum” game wave, and that wave is mostly gone — Neon District, League of Kingdoms, Symbiogenesis, Doctor Who: Worlds Apart, Arc8, ICE Poker, Untamed Isles.
- Ronin — 19 records, 7 ended, 4 silent. The Axie chain has real scars — Tatsumeeko, Ragnarok Libre, Wonder Wars, Axie Homeland‘s sunset, and three paused (Runiverse, Axie Classic, Alurya) — alongside a still-dense living core.
- Solana — 21 records, 6 ended, 6 silent. The ambition chain: big 2021-22 launches, roughly a third gone — Neopets Metaverse, Nyan Heroes, Aurory Tactics, Genopets‘s pivot, Honeyland‘s pause, MetalCore.
- Ethereum L2 — 19 records, 7 ended, 1 silent. The honest mid-table: Zed Champions closed its competitive format for a casino pivot and Nifty Island formally paused for a stealth rebuild — Moonray alone remains unverifiable either way.
- BNB — 24 records, 6 ended, 14 silent. The largest set and the quietest — its endings are documented (CryptoMines, Bomb Crypto) but the silent cohort make up most of the mystery.
- Ethereum mainnet — 12 records, 3 ended, 2 silent. Old money survives: the 2017-19 canon is disproportionately here.
- Immutable — 11 records, 0 ended, 4 silent. The clean sheet: a curated, platform-managed ecosystem — every record either verified living or honestly undetermined; nothing has died on it in our set.
- Smaller sets: Wax 5/0 ended/3 silent (the quiet survivor), GalaChain 5/1/2, Avalanche 7/1/1, Arbitrum 4/1/1, Polkadot 4/2/0, Flow 3/1/0, TON 4/1/1 (the tap-to-earn cohort — the youngest chain in the set already has an ending and a silent).
What the pattern actually is#
Chain survival is a cohort effect wearing a chain’s clothes. Polygon’s dead aren’t dead because of Polygon — they’re dead because it hosted the 2021 earn-wave that died everywhere; the same vintage on BNB produced the same result. Immutable’s clean sheet is also structural in the other direction: a curated publishing pipeline filters games before launch and supports them after, so less junk dies on it. The chain effect is a selection effect.
The other honest finding: silence is a chain property too. BNB’s fourteen unknowns and Solana’s six are mostly older projects whose infra still half-answers but whose teams vanished — the cheap-launch chains accumulate the most zombie records. Ethereum L2’s near-clean column is the closest thing to a healthy ecosystem here — and even it accumulates quiet records over time.
The honest read#
For a player the takeaway is sharper than “pick a good chain”: check the chain’s cohort, not its logo. A 2021-wave game on any chain carries the wave’s survival rate; a curated-ecosystem game carries the curator’s. The per-chain pages carry the ecosystem detail — Solana, BNB, Wax, Polkadot — and the endings taxonomy is in how blockchain games actually end.
