How to Start Playing NFL Rivals — Free, Custodial, Mint Tokens + Pulse Market

NFL Rivals is the NFL’s officially licensed arcade football game for phones — free to play, built by Mythical Games, and quietly the most mainstream on-ramp to NFT player cards anywhere. The start is simple: install the official app, play, and ignore the web3 layer entirely until you want it. The game’s Year 3 rebuild (August 2025) made that split the design itself — cards are locked to your account by default, and converting one into a tradable NFT is a deliberate, optional step.

What NFL Rivals is#

A free-to-play mobile arcade football game for iOS and Android from Mythical Games under an official NFL license — squads of real players, quick matches, live-season events. It runs on Mythical’s own Polkadot-based Mythos chain, but you would never know from playing: like NBA Top Shot, the chain is hidden behind a normal account. Cards earn in-game as locked (non-tradable) collectibles; spending Mint Tokens converts a card into an NFT you can sell on the game’s Pulse Market — priced in USDC since the March 2026 migration. The same studio applies the identical template to FIFA Rivals. Current status sits on the NFL Rivals registry profile.

Requirements#

  • An iOS or Android device — Rivals is mobile-only; there is no PC, console, or browser client.
  • An in-game account — standard registration inside the official app.
  • A wallet — none required — there is no external crypto wallet step at any point. The marketplace is custodial: trading happens inside your Mythical-linked account.

The start#

  1. Install the official app from the iOS App Store or Google Play — published by Mythical Games only.
  2. Play through the tutorial and the early event track — you’ll accumulate locked player cards through normal play with no purchases.
  3. Build your squad from locked cards first. Everything the game asks of you is earnable here; nothing requires minting or buying.
  4. When you actually want to trade a card — to sell a duplicate or buy a specific player — link the Mythical marketplace account from inside the official game and use Mint Tokens to mint that card, then list it on Pulse Market.
  5. Stay inside the official client for every marketplace action — there is no legitimate external Rivals trading site.

The honest economics#

NFL Rivals is genuinely free: the full game loop, locked-card collection and seasonal events need no purchases. The paid step is deliberate conversion — Mint Tokens cost real money, and you only spend them on cards you intend to trade. Pricing on Pulse Market is in USDC, so card values move with player demand, not a game token’s volatility — but a player card is still a speculative collectible whose price follows NFL performance and roster size, not an asset with a floor. The Year 3 rebuild itself is the honest data point: the studio tore down and replaced its first economy because it wasn’t working. Treat anything you mint as a game expense you might not recover.

What the assets do#

  • Player cards — the core collectible; locked by default and tradable on Pulse Market once minted.
  • Mint Tokens — the paid conversion currency that turns a locked card into an NFT.
  • Stadiums — the cosmetic/identity asset layer in the ecosystem.

For what ownership means mechanically — custody, marketplaces, what happens if a game winds down — see what game NFTs actually do.

Safety notes#

The NFL license attracts fakes. Counterfeit “NFL NFT” marketplaces and Rivals-phishing sites are a documented scam shape. Only install the app from the official store listing by Mythical Games, only use links reached from nfl.rivals.game or the game’s official X and Discord, and remember the rule that settles most questions: Rivals never asks for a seed phrase or an external wallet — anything that does is not Rivals.
