How to Start Playing Illuvium: Arena, Zero and What’s Playable Now
Illuvium isn’t one game — it’s a franchise of connected products at different stages, and the “how do I start” answer depends entirely on which one you mean. The short version for 2026: Arena is the free public entry point, Zero is the free companion city-builder, Beyond is the browser collectible experience, and Obelisk Rising — the rebuilt successor to the retired Overworld client — is in invite-only closed alpha. Verified against official sources on 2026-09-18. Our Illuvium registry profile carries the site’s verified status record.
What you can actually play now#
Illuvium: Arena — the free entry point#
Arena is an 8-player free-for-all autobattler where you assemble teams of Illuvials and outlast the lobby. It’s been in open beta since July 2024 and is completely free on the Epic Games Store (PC) — the official FAQ is explicit that you can jump in and play immediately without any ownership or complicated setup. Arena uses a hybrid roster, so you don’t need to own Illuvials to field a team. This is where a new player should start.
Illuvium: Zero — the free companion#
Zero is a city-builder where you build and manage an industrial complex that feeds resources into the wider ecosystem. It’s free to play via a Simulation Plot — a learn-and-experience mode — on Epic Games Store (PC/Mac) and on mobile (iOS and Android), with progress synced across devices through your Illuvium account. Simulation Plots don’t participate in the revenue-sharing that owned Land gets. Note the caveat: Zero is currently on minor updates while the main team focuses on the MMO, which has made its future a community talking point — it’s playable and free, but its development cadence is low.
Obelisk Rising — the closed-alpha flagship#
The original open-world RPG, Illuvium: Overworld, is no longer publicly playable — the client was retired during the ecosystem’s zkEVM migration. Its successor is Obelisk Rising, a creature-collection action RPG/MMO-lite rebuild currently in invite-only Closed Alpha Phase 1. Applications exist through an official form, but selection isn’t guaranteed and builds come with wipes and unfinished systems. The studio’s stated launch target is December 2026 — a target, not a confirmed date. This is not a beginner entry point right now.
Illuvium: Beyond — the browser collectible#
Beyond is a browser-based collectible experience for showcasing and personalizing Illuvials — live, and accessible directly on the web without a client download.
Start with Arena#
The practical first session:
- Create a free Illuvium account.
- Download Arena from the Epic Games Store.
- Play — the hybrid roster gives you Illuvials to battle with immediately; no wallet, no purchase, no NFTs.
Arena’s Gauntlet mode is an 8-player free-for-all where you draft and position a team each round — creature synergies and positioning are the skill, not card collection depth. That’s the whole onboarding: the ownership layer stays optional until you decide you want it.
Zero as a companion#
Zero complements rather than gates anything. It produces resources that feed the wider Illuvium economy — notably Fuel — and it’s the place to learn the ecosystem’s resource loop without combat. Playing Arena doesn’t require Zero, and nothing in Zero requires owning Land to try. Treat it as an optional side experience, not a prerequisite.
When wallet and NFT ownership matter#
Playing is free; owning is where the blockchain layer starts. The NFT-side assets are:
- Illuvials — the creatures you battle with; caught Illuvials can carry their stats into Arena’s competitive play.
- Land — plots used in Zero for the revenue-sharing side of the economy.
- Tradable assets — collectible and cosmetic items across the franchise.
Once you want to hold, trade or earn through those assets, the infrastructure is Immutable — wallets, Passport and the marketplace are covered in our Immutable ecosystem guide, so we won’t duplicate it here. The practical version: Arena’s free mode proves you don’t need any of it to play.
What happened to Overworld?#
Overworld — the original open-world creature-collection client — was shut down during the migration of Illuvium’s infrastructure to Immutable zkEVM. The flagship product has been rebuilt under the Obelisk Rising name as a tighter MMO-lite: procedural dungeons, boss encounters, bonding and progression systems, currently in invite-only closed alpha with a December 2026 launch target. Whether the Obelisk Rising name permanently replaces “Overworld” is something official material hasn’t fully settled — treat the rebrand as current, not necessarily final.
What to play today#
- Want to actually play? Arena — free, public, live.
- Want the companion/economy side? Zero — free sim plot, desktop and mobile.
- Want collectibles? Beyond — live in the browser.
- Waiting for the MMO? Obelisk Rising — apply for the alpha; public access doesn’t exist yet.
Verify the current status#
Access states here change fast — a closed alpha today can be open tomorrow, and a launch target can move. Everything above was checked against official sources on 2026-09-18; our guide to checking a game’s real status covers the verification method, and the NFT games registry keeps the date-stamped record.
