Axie Infinity Cards Explained: What Each Card Does

Axie cards are the actual game inside Axie Infinity: Origins — every axie’s six body parts map to six cards, and a match is a card battle of sequencing, energy and team synergy. Understanding the card layer is the difference between “playing” and actually competing.

How the card system works#

Each axie contributes the cards tied to its body parts — eyes, ears, mouth, horn, back, tail — so a three-axie team fields the deck those parts generate. Cards cost energy (you get a fixed pool per turn), have classes and effects (attack, shield, heal, utility), and resolve in sequence order — what you play first changes what your second card does. Team composition is deck-building: three axies are chosen for how their twelve-ish cards synergise.

Runes and charms — the modifier layer#

Origins layers collectible modifiers on top of base cards: runes add passive effects to axies; charms modify individual cards. This is where the collectible economy meets gameplay — the “deck” you bring is base cards + which runes/charms you own and socket. Free starter axies play with vanilla kits; collectible assets widen the modifier pool (mechanics only — we don’t track prices).

How to actually improve#

  1. Learn your three starters’ cards cold — what each part contributes, the energy cost, the sequence that works.
  2. Count energy, not cards — turns are energy-budgeted; sequencing that wastes energy loses more than it looks.
  3. Read opponent parts — their visible axie parts predict their deck; play around what they can do, not what you hope they can’t.
  4. Add modifiers last — runes/charms compound existing skill; buying into them before the fundamentals is backwards.

The honest caveats#

Card and modifier balance shifts every season — Season 18 closed in early September 2026 and seasons rebalance continuously, so any guide listing “best cards” is a snapshot, not a law. And card guides describe Origins — the Terrariums land game is a different system entirely.

Safety notes#

Buy axies/runes/charms only through the official App.axie / Ronin Market links from the game. The card-collectible layer attracts fake “rare axie” listings and Discord middlemen — no legitimate seller needs your seed phrase or a side-channel.
