How to Start Playing Aavegotchi
Aavegotchi is the ghost-pet universe that survived its own architecture change twice — chain and now studio. Pixelcraft is handing stewardship to AavegotchiDAO through 2026, the game runs live on Base, and you can explore the Gotchiverse without owning anything. Here’s the honest path in.
Which Aavegotchi is which, today#
The name now covers an ecosystem, not one product. The Gotchiverse 3D is the explorable world; Gotchi Guardians is the combat mode. The collectible layer is the Aavegotchi NFTs themselves plus wearables, REALM land parcels and portals. What matters historically: the whole project migrated from Polygon to Base — the Polygon contracts were frozen, so anything showing Polygon-era items as current is stale. Canonical assets live on Base now.
Requirements#
- A browser — that’s it for exploring. Gotchiverse 3D runs in-browser.
- An EVM wallet on Base — optional — needed only to use or buy NFT assets (Aavegotchis, wearables, REALM, portals). Wallet fundamentals live at NFTUniverse.
- Assets for full play — visitors can wander the Gotchiverse for free; owning an Aavegotchi or wearables is what unlocks the ownership layer. Buying happens on the Aavegotchi Baazaar or OpenSea.
The free starter path#
- Open the official site and enter the Gotchiverse as a visitor — no wallet, no purchase.
- Explore the world and Gotchi Guardians to see whether the game loop fits you before anything touches a wallet.
- If you want the ownership layer, set up a Base-compatible EVM wallet and look at the Baazaar — start with a wearable or a low-tier Aavegotchi rather than land.
What the assets do#
Aavegotchis are the playable characters; wearables modify them; REALM parcels are land inside the Gotchiverse; portals are how new Aavegotchis historically entered the supply. Mechanics only — we don’t track prices. The registry profile carries the asset list and custody model; what game NFTs actually do explains the mechanics.
The 2026 context#
This one is mid-transition, and it’s the honest kind: Pixelcraft Studios announced in May 2026 it was stepping back from the one-studio model, with a structured handover to AavegotchiDAO scoped for June–September 2026 — IP, channels and infrastructure all on the DAO’s table — and a client update (v2.2.0) shipped during it. “DAO-led” is not a euphemism for “dead”: the record’s status is active, but governance transitions are exactly the risk pattern covered in the status guide — worth reading before treating any NFT game as permanent.
