Flow Nft Games Explained

Flow is the chain Dapper Labs built to fix what CryptoKitties broke — a consumer-grade L1 where the original NFT game migrated from Ethereum and the biggest licensed sports NFT property ever still runs. Our five tracked records show both sides: three legitimately live, two shut down — one after a reboot that never came, one folded in a portfolio cut.

The cluster at a glance#

  • NBA Top Shot — active; the licensed NBA moments property that ran its 2026 Finals Drop in June with season-long set challenges — plus a documented IPFS permanence audit, one of the registry’s cleanest operations.
  • CryptoKitties — active; the 2017 original, migrated from Ethereum to the chain its own studio built, revived with Telegram-seasons relaunch and Meowcoin collectibles.
  • Sunflower Land — active; the farming sim running a real seasonal cadence (Chapter 15 ‘The Ascension Age’ Aug–Nov 2026, twelve skill trees) — the cluster’s most “ordinary game” record.
  • Chainmonsters — shut down; the MMORPG that stopped development in April 2023 and closed its servers “for a hoped-for reboot” — three-plus years of hoping ended with its domain lapsing in October 2026, tracked honestly.
  • MotoGP Ignition — shut down; Animoca’s licensed MotoGP manager, whose three-week card-gated closed alpha in July 2023 was as far as it ever got — folded in Motorverse’s October 2024 portfolio cut while the license was retained “for future initiatives.”

The pattern: the studio-owned chain, for better and worse#

Flow is the registry’s only record where a studio built its flagship and the chain underneath it — CryptoKitties→Dapper→Flow→Top Shot is one vertical stack. The upside shows in polish: consumer onboarding without crypto-literacy, licensed IP at scale. The downside is concentration: your assets’ chain health tracks one company’s gravity. When Dapper’s releases slowed, the cluster thinned — Sunflower Land is an external game that chose the chain; the flagship titles are Dapper’s own. Different risk shape than a neutral L1.

What ownership looks like on Flow#

Flow wallets hold licensed moments, kitties, Meowcoins and game items on a dedicated chain — Dapper’s custody model means mainstream UX (Dapper Wallet) over self-custody choice, with assets tradeable on Flow marketplaces. Top Shot’s permanence audit (IPFS-pinned moments survive independent of the service) is the standard we wish more records met. For the mechanics see what game NFTs actually do.

How we classify this cluster#

Three active, one shut down — the stoppage became permanent when its domain lapsed: the honest version of a stopped game, versus records that simply went quiet. Per-record evidence sits on each profile; the set is browsable via the registry index, verified on the schedule described at how we verify.
