How to Start Playing Splinterlands
Splinterlands is a card-battler on the Hive blockchain — and yes, you can genuinely start for free. A free account gets you through the tutorial Campaign and into Frontier, the beginner format where you earn your first cards, all without a wallet or a purchase. The paid layer exists, but it’s a choice you make after you know the game, not a ticket at the door. Here’s how the start actually works, verified against the official docs on 2026-09-18. Our Splinterlands registry profile carries the current verified status record.
What you need to start#
Two levels of access, and the difference matters:
Free account — a username, email and password on splinterlands.com. No wallet, no NFTs, no purchase. You can play the Campaign, earn cards and play ranked in the free Frontier format. Limits apply: account names get a “_lite” suffix until upgraded, and the full ownership/marketplace layer stays locked.
Summoner’s Spellbook ($10 one-time) — an optional upgrade that turns your account into a full Hive blockchain account. It unlocks marketplace trading, makes earned cards transferable, and opens the ownership layer of the game; it comes with 3,000 credits and starter packs. It’s not needed to play, it’s not an investment, and nothing requires you to buy it — it just changes what your cards can do. If you do upgrade, the official flow creates Hive keys you’ll need to back up, and Hive Keychain is the recommended wallet tool.
Create your account#
Go to splinterlands.com, click Log In, switch to the Register tab, enter a username and email, set a password, and verify your email. That account is playable immediately — the whole signup is under five minutes and stays inside the browser.
Play the Campaign#
The Campaign is the official tutorial: a guided PvE series that teaches mana costs, splinters (the game’s factions), summoners and battlefield positioning. Completing it awards your first cards from the Foundations set — the free card set designed for new players. Foundations cards are earned, not bought, and are bound to your account.
Play your first ranked battles#
Splinterlands currently runs several ranked formats. The ones that matter on day one:
- Frontier — the format built for new players: Foundations-set cards only, completely free, with daily card draws and chest rewards as you climb Bronze, Silver and Gold. This is where your first ranked matches should happen.
- Modern — free to enter, limited to the two most recent card sets (currently Rebellion and Conclave Arcana — the rotation changes, so check before building around a set). Battles cost energy, which regenerates over time.
- Wild — every card ever released is legal, but entry requires a paid Wild Pass. Not a beginner format.
How cards and assets work#
Every Splinterlands card exists as a token, but two different ownership rules apply:
- Foundations and reward cards are bound to your account — earned through play, usable everywhere they’re legal, but not tradable on the free tier.
- Owned, tradable cards — purchased cards, and unbound reward cards, become real transferable assets once the Spellbook has upgraded your account to a Hive wallet. That’s when marketplace buying, selling, renting and transfers unlock.
The general pattern — what “owning” a game NFT actually means, on-chain versus in-game — is covered in what game NFTs actually do; here the only version you need is: free cards are yours to use, paid cards are yours to trade.
Do you need a wallet or NFTs?#
No — not to start. The free account, Campaign and Frontier format need nothing but an email. The Hive wallet enters the picture only if you decide to buy the Spellbook, which creates it for you; Hive Keychain then handles day-to-day use. You can play meaningfully for weeks without touching any of that, and you’ll know whether the upgrade is worth it long before you need it.
What to learn after your first match#
- Finish the whole Campaign — it builds the summoner/splinter intuition the ranked ladder assumes.
- Stay in Frontier while your Foundations collection grows; the daily rewards compound quickly early on.
- Watch how mana caps and rulesets change a match — they matter more than card rarity at beginner level.
- Consider a guild once you’re playing daily — guilds add merits and a social layer that helps the learning curve.
Verify the current game status#
Format rules, set rotations and reward structures change — everything time-sensitive above was checked against official Splinterlands documentation on 2026-09-18, but treat specifics as dated. Our guide to checking whether a game is still active covers the general verification method, and the NFT games registry keeps the date-stamped status record for Splinterlands and the other games we track. New to blockchain games entirely? Start with the beginner’s guide first.
