Axie Infinity in 2026: Origins, Homeland and Classic — What’s Still Alive
“Axie Infinity” isn’t one game anymore. In 2026 the name covers three distinct experiences — a live competitive card battler, a land game that has already sunset, and the original Classic now moving toward community control. This guide separates them and shows what actually exists today.
At a glance#
The Axie games sit in three very different places right now:
- Axie Infinity: Origins — the current flagship battler. Actively developed and in regular competitive seasons.
- Axie Infinity: Homeland — the land game. Sunset on June 17, 2026 and replaced by a separate successor, Terrariums.
- Axie Classic — the original Axie game. Still playable, but Season 16 was the last competitive season run under Sky Mavis’s direct structure and a transition toward community governance is underway.
Axie Infinity: Origins — active#
Origins is the free-to-start competitive card battler most people mean today when they say “Axie”. It remains in active development: Season 18 ran through early September 2026 with an 80,000 bAXS prize pool, and the S18 postseason Elite 4 concluded on September 6. New seasons continue on a regular cadence, rewards are denominated in the ecosystem’s bAXS token, and the game is playable on desktop via Mavis Hub and on mobile.
If you’re looking at the active game, Origins is it. Our registry entry covers its verified status and key facts: Axie Infinity: Origins registry profile. For actually getting set up and into your first match, see the dedicated Origins start guide — free starter axies mean no purchase is required to begin.
Axie Infinity: Homeland — sunset#
Homeland was Axie’s land-management game — placing axies on plots, gathering resources, building. It no longer exists: Homeland officially sunset on June 17, 2026, and was replaced the same day by Terrariums, a lighter, more passive land experience where plots generate bAXS on an hourly tick.
Terrariums is a distinct successor, not “Homeland renamed”: progression did not carry over, delegation contracts were revoked automatically, and the new game started fresh for every land holder. If you held Homeland assets, the registry entry records the transition and its evidence: Axie Infinity: Homeland registry profile.
Axie Classic — still playable, in transition#
Axie Classic is the original Axie battler — the game that launched the entire play-to-earn era. After being revived in late 2024, it ran developer-managed competitive seasons through mid-2026. Competitive Season 16, which ran August 12 – September 10, 2026, was the final competitive season under Sky Mavis’s direct structure; the S16 offseason concluded with a final Season Championship scheduled for September 19–20.
How the Axie games relate to Ronin#
All three sit on Ronin, the chain Sky Mavis built for Axie — axies, land, and items are Ronin assets, and rewards across the ecosystem are paid in bAXS. Ronin is also the chain behind other registry titles like Pixels. For the wallet, marketplace and ecosystem mechanics, see Ronin games explained for players.
If you’re looking to play Axie today#
- For active competitive play: Origins is the current, officially-supported game — free to start, covered by our start guide above.
- For Classic: the game is playable while the community transition completes. Enter knowing its competitive seasons under Sky Mavis are over and its future structure is still being decided.
- For land gameplay: Homeland itself is gone — the successor is Terrariums, a different and much more passive experience built around land and axie ownership rather than active play.
This isn’t a ranking — they’re different kinds of experiences, and only one of them is a conventional live game.
How to verify Axie game status yourself#
Statuses change — Classic’s community transition in particular is still in progress. Our method for checking whether a blockchain game is actually alive is in Is My NFT Game Dead?, and the full game registry holds this site’s date-stamped status research on every tracked title.
