How to Start Playing The Sandbox: LAND, SAND and Your First Experience
The Sandbox is a voxel-style metaverse of player-made experiences — and you can be playing one within minutes, without a wallet, without SAND, and without owning a single NFT. The blockchain layer is there if you want it, but it sits behind the play, not in front of it. Here’s the actual start path, verified against official Sandbox documentation on 2026-09-18. Our Sandbox registry profile carries the site’s verified status record.
What you need to start#
Three things, none of them crypto:
- A free Sandbox account — created on sandbox.game with a username, email and password (social and wallet logins also exist).
- The free Launcher — The Sandbox’s hub app, which installs and updates the Game Client for you.
- A computer that can run the Game Client — Experiences play inside the client, not the browser.
That’s it. No wallet, no token purchase, no NFT. The official docs are explicit that a wallet connection is optional and can be added to your account at any time.
Your first experience#
Once logged in, the Launcher and the Map on the Sandbox website show playable Experiences — creator-made games ranging across genres. Many are free-to-play. A caveat worth knowing upfront: experience gating is the creator’s choice — some experiences are fully open, some reserve bonus content for NFT holders, and a few require a specific NFT to enter at all. The free selection is large enough that beginners don’t need to touch the gated stuff.
Pick one, press play, done. That’s the whole first session.
Do you need SAND, a wallet or NFTs?#
No — not to begin. SAND is the ecosystem’s token, used for buying avatar equipment and accessing paid content, and earned through Play&Earn events. None of that is required for ordinary play. The wallet becomes relevant only if you want to own, trade or claim things: assets you create, items you earn in Play&Earn events (which also require account verification/KYC), or purchases on the marketplace. Connect it later, or never — the game doesn’t force the decision on day one.
What is LAND?#
LAND is The Sandbox’s virtual real estate — an ERC-721 NFT on Ethereum, with the active ownership layer living on Polygon (LAND can be bridged between the two). Owning LAND lets you publish and monetise Experiences, and multiple LANDs can combine into Estates or multi-owner Districts. It’s the creator/publisher layer, not the player layer: you don’t need LAND to play anything. Think of it as owning a venue rather than a ticket.
What can players actually own?#
The Sandbox’s NFT layer covers a few concrete asset types — but not everything in the game is an NFT:
- LAND — publishable real estate, as above.
- Assets — voxel objects built in VoxEdit; creators can use their own Assets on their own LAND without minting them as NFTs at all.
- Avatars and equipment — tradable items for your in-game identity.
- Catalysts — tokens used in the asset minting process.
The pattern — what an NFT actually proves versus what it does in-game — is covered in what game NFTs actually do. Here the practical version is: NFTs unlock ownership and marketplace rights, not access to the game itself.
Creating in The Sandbox#
Creation is optional — most players never touch it. If you do, it’s worth knowing the tooling is mid-transition:
- Game Maker — the established drag-and-drop, no-code creator for building Experiences, still documented and shipping.
- VoxEdit — the voxel-art tool for making Assets.
- The Sandbox Studio — launched June 2026, a newer AI-native creation platform on the Genesys engine with weekly engine updates. The Sandbox’s documentation now spans both tools and the exact division between them is still evolving — check the current Creator Hub rather than assuming older Game Maker tutorials are the whole picture.
Marketplace and wallets, when you’re ready#
The Sandbox marketplace trades LAND and Assets; connecting a wallet happens from your profile on the dashboard whenever you choose. LAND bought historically on Ethereum can be bridged to Polygon, which is where the active ownership layer now sits — secondary-market LAND is also listed on external marketplaces like OpenSea, linked from the official map. None of this is part of your first session.
Verify the current game status#
Metaverse tooling moves fast — the Studio launch alone rewrote the creation story in 2026, and experience availability, reward mechanics and marketplace specifics all change. Everything time-sensitive above was checked on 2026-09-18. Our guide to checking whether a game is still active covers the general verification method, and the NFT games registry holds the date-stamped record for The Sandbox and the other games we track. If you’re completely new to blockchain games, the beginner’s guide is the right first stop, and all our game guides live under Game Guides.
